Description

Obi is the first robotic dining companion of its kind. As eating is one of life’s great pleasures and a basic human need Obi is a revolutionary dining device for people living with physical challenges. For loved ones or patients suffering from Cerebral Palsy ALS Parkinson’s or any other condition that impairs upper extremity motor control Obi provides an independent dining experience. Use of this device involves both a user and a caregiver. For people with upper extremity impairment this device automates the motion of a human arm during eating. The user operates the switches to choose among food options and then commands food delivery. Through the robotic arm the device becomes an extension of the user and his or her intent of what and when to eat. The caregiver is responsible for a lot of set-up – positioning the device for optimal use powering on the device teaching the robot appropriate food delivery locations and cleaning after use. Please note at least one off-the-shelf Accessibility Switch is required to eat with Obi as the feeder aid is controlled by switches and be operated by any part of the body that can activate the switch. Do not use Obi if the patient is unable to operate any Accessibility Switch such as a Sip and Puff or Buddy Button. Obi is appropriate for both adults and kids. The plates are microwave safe and the plate placemat and spoons are all dishwasher safe. All foods and liquids are compatible with Obi. However foods need to be prepared and cut into pieces no bigger than 0.75 X 0.75 X 0.75 or smaller. The ideal size is between a pea and a grape. Larger sizes decrease the capture efficiency of the spoons. Obi can deliver food to a maximum height of 15.3 above the mounting surface and a maximum low of 2 below the mounting surface. The device has a maximum reach for food delivery of 16 from the edge of the plate. Each Obi comes complete with the Obi 1 plate 1 placemat 1 large spoon 1 small spoon 1 power charger medium a user manual 1 buddy button red and 1 buddy button green. Some of these accessories are available separately. The Obi is Latex-free and natural rubber free.
